Three Books Becoming Movies in your Future

Updated: March 24, 2024

Like many book lovers, we get stoked when studios grab the screen rights to stories we adore. Bringing a story to life is no small feat, especially when you have a clan of readers commentating on the product the entire process. Every part of a production is vital to a film’s success and I’m curious to see these three come alive. This list of books becoming movies is still in pre-production, but I am nonetheless excited that they're coming to the big screen.

  1. Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

  2. Trust by Hernan Diaz

  3. One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez

My anticipated list of books becoming movies

1. Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

In this story, we follow Eleanor. She lives a mundane life and never strays from her habitual routines, until she meets the new IT guy. Their story collides when they aid an elderly man who has fallen in the street. The three lives weave together in a realistic and meaningful way.

If you read my 2023 Reading Wrap-Up, you know that Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman was one of my favorite reads of that year. You can imagine my delight when I discovered that this book is coming to the big screen. I don't know the release date of this adaptation, but I do know that Harry Bradbeer is the director. I also know that studios MGM and Hello Sunshine are producing it. I can’t say if their taste in adapting the novel will stay true to its essence, but I hope Honeyman jumps on board as a producer to help maintain the story’s heartbeat.

2. Trust by Hernan Diaz

Diaz tells a story of wealth, broken romances, and loss.

Trust is another book I read last year. Despite my initial reading experience, I’m excited about this adaptation because Kate Winslet is attached to it. She is going to star in and produce the film with HBO. Because of my previous experience with this book, I want to reread it before the film's release. If you love Winslet and haven’t read this book yet, I implore you to grab the physical version instead of the audio because of its multiplex structure. This book was too complex to listen to. Lastly, it’s rumored release date is sometime this year (2024); keep an eye out for any news.

3. One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez

I haven’t read One Hundred Years of Solitude, yet it’s been on my TBR for a year or two. The premise, hype, and genre put this book on my shelf; it’s a magical realism story about humankind and discovering a new land through the lens of a multigenerational family. I am excited to pick it up this year. Netflix is adapting this film, but not much else has been released regarding the cast or timeline.

books becoming movies

My anticipation for these books becoming movies is solely because of my experience reading the first two books, and the various research I’ve immersed myself in regarding the last. I have no expectations of how the studios will handle these stories, but one can hope they will stay true to their essence while transporting them to the big screen.
